The aurochs (Bos primigenius) is an extinct species of bovine, considered the wild ancestor of modern domestic cattle. The aurochs probably evolved in Asia and migrated west and north during warm interglacial periods. The oldest-known aurochs fossils date to the Middle Pleistocene. Three subspecies have traditionally been recognized: the Eurasian aurochs (B. p. primigenius), the Indian aurochs (B. p. namadicus), and the North African aurochs (B. p. mauritanicus). Chinese geneticists have proposed a fourth, the East Asian aurochs (B. p. sinensis), based on mitochondrial DNA evidence. At least two dwarf subspecies developed on Mediterranean islands due to Pleistocene sea level changes.
