Coryphodon gets its name from the Greek for "pointed tooth," a reference to the sharp peaks on the ridges of its molars. This extinct genus belongs to the pantodonts, the earliest group of large mammals that browsed on plants. It moved across what is now northern North America, where it was one of the biggest animals in the Wasatch Formation, and took over from an earlier pantodont called *Barylambda*. Scientists consider *Coryphodon* the forerunner of *Hypercoryphodon*, a genus that lived in Mongolia during the Late Eocene.
Fossils of *Coryphodon* are plentiful in North America, with fewer finds in Europe, Mongolia, and China. It was a small to medium-sized member of the family Coryphodontidae, set apart from its relatives mainly by the shape of its teeth.
Standing about 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall at the shoulder and stretching 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) long, *Coryphodon* was one of the biggest mammals around at the time. It moved very slowly, with long upper limbs and shorter lower limbs built to carry its bulk. The creature likely had little need for strong defenses, since most predators of its era were much smaller. Its brain weighed only 90 grams (3.2 ounces) against a body weight of roughly 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds), giving it one of the smallest brain-to-body ratios of any mammal, living or extinct.
Its teeth resembled those of early hoofed mammals, with a dental formula of 3,1,4,3 over 3,1,4,3, totaling 44 teeth. *Coryphodon* had tusks that grew from its canine teeth, similar to those of dinocerates, which is why it was originally lumped into the now-outdated group Amblypoda. The skull lacked a sagittal crest and had a broad, flat top, while the incisors were quite small. The enamel on its teeth featured oblique lines of nested chevrons, likely an adaptation to prevent cracking.
The postcranial skeleton hints at a semi-aquatic lifestyle. The trunk vertebrae had reduced neural spines, a trait often linked to water-adapted movement in mammals. Its limbs were stout, its feet short, and each foot had five toes with small hoof bones. Though the feet looked like those of *Uintatherium*, this similarity came from convergent evolution, not close kinship.
